Make Sure You're Legal When You're on the Road

If you want to drive a car in Illinois, there are a few things that you need to have. You will have to have a valid driver's license and registration. You will also have to be able to prove financial responsibility, which can only be accomplished in the state by purchasing liability insurance. In Illinois, you will need a minimum of $20,000 worth of liability to cover injury of death to one person, $40,000 of liability for injury or death to more than one person, and $15,000 of property damage liability.

Proving Insurance in Illinois

In Illinois, you will have to be able to prove that you have insurance. Your insurance provider will give you a card that you will need to keep in your car. If you are stopped by the police or get into an accident, you will need to show this card. You might also get a letter from the Secretary of State's office asking for proof of insurance. This letter is sent out randomly. If you get one of these letters, you will be required to follow the instructions that are provided within 30 days.

Not Having Insurance in Illinois

If you drive without insurance in the state of Illinois, the state will suspend your license plates. In order to get your license plates reinstated, you will have to get the minimum amounts of required insurance. You will also have to pay a $100 reinstatement fee. If you are caught driving without insurance more than once, you will have your license plates suspended at least four months. You will be assessed a fine of at least $500 if you are driving without insurance and get in an accident or are stopped for a moving violation.

Other Insurance for Your Car

Although you are required to have liability insurance in Illinois, you might want to have more insurance. You may want to purchase more than the minimum amount of liability insurance, especially if you have assets or a home that you want to protect. If you are driving a nice car, you might want to purchase collision and comprehensive insurance as well, because liability insurance does not protect your vehicle. If you are financing your vehicle and will be upside down in your car loan for a while, you might want to purchase gap insurance. Another form of auto insurance that you might be interested in is uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage.
